The Women's Peace Camp at Greenham Common was started in 1981. 'Women for Life on Earth' marched from Cardiff to Greenham between the 27th August to 5th September to protest about the NATO decision to site Cruise Missiles with nuclear warheads in the UK. They didn't want the nuclear weapons and the decision had been made without any discussion in parliament. Some people also felt that giving over Greenham Common to the USA was a wrongful use of common land. A photograph of one of the march banners is on page 30

I first went there with my friends from the Derby Women's Centre on the third anniversary of the NATO meeting, December 12th 1982. 30,000 women went to 'Embrace the Base'. We decorated the fence, lit candles and sang protest songs.
